Ankle Sprains Treatment Options
Finding a sprained ankle treatment is not difficult, as this problem is something that often clears up on its own. Finding the right sprain ankle treatment, however, can make the healing process quicker and more effective.
Sprained ankles are extremely common, and occur when one's ankle ligament is forced to stretch beyond its limits. This often happens when practicing sports or other physical activities. A severe sprain will cause a complete tearing of these elastic fibers and will take greater time to heal. Either way, there is an appropriate treatment for sprained ankle for each individual.
One should begin the treatment for sprained ankle as soon as possible. Resting the ankle is one of the most important steps one can take. One should immediately sit or lie down, with all pressure off of the ankle. Then, ice, wrapped in a compress, should be applied directly to the spot for optimal sprain ankle treatment. This icing process must be continued 3 to 4 times daily for approximately 20 to 30 minutes for as many days as it takes for the ankle to heal. Compresses should also be applied. These should only be taken off in order to examine or to ice the ankle. One should be sure to keep his or her dressings or bandages clean. Immediately following the sprain and icing, the ankle should also be elevated about heart level for at least 48 hours. This method of natural healing is often called the RICE method. It is effective, though it may take a few days for the ankle to feel back to normal again.
Using over the counter medications in conjunction with the RICE medication is reccommended, as this allows the patient a greater level of comfort during the healing process. Medications that may be helpful include Ibuprofen products like Aleve and Motrin; Naproxen; and Acetaminophen products like Tylenol.
For those that must move around, though it is not reccommended, crutches will be helpful. Physical therapy exercises can also be used, but only after the swelling in the ankle has gone down. A doctor should be contacted before any exercises are started. The doctor can instruct the individual on what exercises will be the most beneficial. Generally, these exercises work to restore the ankle's range of motion, strength, flexibility, and overall balance. These skills are needed in order to support the joint. Exercises might include varied degrees of balance challenge like standing on one leg. Also, if the ankle was injured during a sport or activity, a doctor should be notified, so that one can gain knowledge of when he or she may participate in this activity again - if at all. In some rare cases, surgery may be needed for treatment, though only a doctor can make this decision. Surgery is ususally only necessary if the patient is experiencing a feeling of severe instability in and throughout the ankle joint.
